CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY BIBLIOPHILES

Term Card printed for the Cambridge Bibliophiles, the Bibliophile Union of the University of Cambridge.

The Society was founded by Scott Mandelbrote.

The Lent Term Card for 2020 was hand-set in pica sized Brook type, from the Eragny Press and printed in part on the Columbian Press at the Historical Print Room of the Cambridge University Library (which has the only known holding of this foundry type and as such had to be printed on site). The edition was printed on Abbey Mills Greenfield watermarked paper. The wrapper was printed on an Arab Press using Caslon Old Face and Lettres Ornees types, on Somerset paper. The edition was limited to 75 numbered copies for the Society, and 30 copies numbered in Roman Numerals for the Press.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY SOCIETY OF BIBLIOPHILES
OXFORD UNIVERSITY SOCIETY OF BIBLIOPHILES

OXFORD UNIVERSITY BIBLIOPHILES

Term card printed for the Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles (OUSB).

The OUSB is a club run by students of the University of Oxford, founded in 1950, with meetings held from 1951. Term programme cards were printed by numerous well-known private presses and printers, the output of which was documented in Bibliophiles at Oxford: a Celebration of fifty years of the Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles, 1951–2000, with descriptive notes on the term cards (Nash, Paul W.; Howes, Justin (2006)). The Society closed in 2000, when interest waned such that a committee could no longer be formed, but was reformed in Trinity Term 2008, with the first Term card printed by the Rampant Lions Press.

The Trinity Term Events Programme for 2022 was typeset in Spectrum and Cancelleresca Bastarda by Mark Askam and printed from plates on an Albion Press in two colours on suminagashi Zerkall mould-made paper from Sarah Amatt, with Barcham Green Boxley Grey hand-made paper covers from John Purcell Paper, and suminagashi Wibalin Natural wrappers from Victoria Hall. The Society’s device tipped-on the front was designed by typographer Michael Harvey. The edition was limited to 75 copies for the OUSB, numbered ‘[number]/75’ and 25 copies for the Press, numbered ‘SJ [number] PP’.

A MONDRIAN TYPECASE

Printed for the Oxford Guild of Printers, List of Members cover.

The Oxford Guild of Printers was founded by Jonathan Stephenson of the Rocket Press and ran for 40 years, membership primarily for letterpress printers and publishers in the UK, with the first Fair held in 1986. The Guild ceased regular activity in 2023.

The print, A4 in size, representing a printer’s typecase, but as a Piet Mondrian artwork, was folded for the cover to the List of Members 2021-2. Printed on an Arab Press from plates made by Lyme Bay Press, with type handset in Times New Roman. The text is a play on the definition of “registration” and specifically bad registration, in so far as it relates to a list of members, or the lining up of colours in printing. A separate print, without text and unfolded, was also printed.

[A postcard of the separate print was also produced].
